Internet Connectivity

ACOnet provides a backbone service connecting its customers and offering them efficient access to international Research Networks as well as to Commidity Internet. As a National Research and Education Network (NREN) ACOnet aims to support primarily issues of nonprofit organisations of research, education and culture. As a consequence of this the costs of an ACOnet participance are only charged for the subscribed commodity bandwidth of commercial traffic. Data exchange with other ACOnet participants and with other NRENs is free.

Commodity Internet

The subscribed commodity bandwidth according to the ACOnet participation agreement (german document beneath named "Grundsätze für die Teilnahme an ACOnet") limits downloads exclusively from the commercial Internet. Therefore ACOnet provides an efficient an redundant 2*10 Gigabit connection to Level3 and a redundant 2*10 Gigabit connection to the Vienna Internet eXchange (VIX)

Academic Traffic

Up to one Gigabit bandwidth, dependent to the physical connection, is available for data exchange between ACOnet participants and other NRENs. Especially mentioned:

  • GÉANT:  ACOnet has a redundant 2*10 Gigabit Connection to the pan-european research network GÉANT which provides a fibre optical backbone network to the other european National Research and Education Networks.
  • private NREN Peerings with the neighbor Research Networks CESNET.cz and SANET.sk as well as (via CESNET) with PIONIER.gov.pl.
  • ACO-IX: Connection to the ACOnet Layer2 backbone in order to set up and operate peering connections to other ACOnet participants. This service enables a customer to communicate with other ACO-IX customers, exceeding  their Commodity bandwidth.  Subscribed bandwidth (Commodity Internet) traffic of participants has priority over the complementary ACO-IX traffic on all ACOnet customer and backbone links.

If you are interested in becoming a participant of ACOnet to use this service, please read the information posted in request.
