IPv6 - the protocols for the "next generation" Internet

Version 6 of the Internet Protocol Suite is expected to solve some major problems with IPv4 - and in particular the expected depletion (within a few years) of the pool of unused IPv4 address space.

ACOnet and Vienna University have started quite early to track the development of standards (RFCs) and technology. The primary goal was to keep up to date with development, to keep staff involved on a continuous basis and to influence and support the development of standards and products. For that reason ACOnet has actively participated in 6NET http://www.6net.org/ and in other projects like the IPv6 Task Force activities in Austria http://www.ipv6tf.org/.

The distribution of know-how about IPv6 among the ACOnet participants is (still) one of the major goals.

The following pages describe the IPv6-Service and its implementation, as well as some background details.
