ACOnet provides a nation-wide fibre optic backbone with high-performance access to international academic networks via GÉANT, as well as to the Internet. Furthermore, ACOnet offers its participants various target-group-specific services to support research projects and communities.

ACOnet and COVID-19:

The ACOnet team is working from the home office again since 19 November 2021. Our availability has not changed, however. You can reach us Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00, CEST; preferably by e-mail but also by phone (see contact information). In the case of an emergency you may also call us outside our office hours and leave a message. If necessary, we will call back swiftly.

ACOnet's 30th birthday in 2020 went uncelebrated due to the pandemic. Therefore, it was all the more important to us not to let the next anniversary pass by without fanfare!

To bring together as many colleagues as possible, we combined our "35 Years of ACOnet" birthday celebration with the 72nd Meeting of the ACOnet TBPG. In addition to the TBPG participants, numerous former colleagues and external partners were invited. We were delighted to welcome many of them to an enjoyable evening at the Weltmuseum Wien on 6 November 2025.

In addition to a brief historical review by Harald Michl and welcoming remarks by Vice Rector Ronald Maier, the official part of the program also honored several people who are particularly close to us – above all, the infrastructure team at A1 Telekom Austria AG and our department head Christian Panigl, who has played a key role in shaping ACOnet from the very beginning.

However, most of the evening was devoted to delicious food and socializing. Additional entertainment was provided by historical photos and memorabilia, as well as a magician who visited every table, captivating the audience with his tricks.

It was a very delightful celebration, and we would like to thank all our guests for joining us!
