The event is part of the project series "aaron's law" and will take place on 1 February 2023 at the Schubert Theater in Vienna. The program includes a presentation of the project series, a Future Talk and a vernissage of the Virtual Puppet Museum.

Our net:art coordination center has a new website! In addition to a fresh look & feel and completely revised content, it also offers the latest information on the project series "aaron's law", which will accompany us throughout 2023.

The annual "Safer Internet Day" takes place worldwide on 7 February 2023. The whole of February is "Safer Internet Action Month" in Austria. You will also find extensive information material on the subject of "Safer Internet" on the ISPA website.

After more than 30 years, we will part with our logo on 1 October 2022. It will be superseded by a visual umbrella brand for ACOnet, ACONET Association and ACOmarket GmbH. In the course of this, we are also renewing all our forms and documents, including the "ACOnet Acceptable Use Policy" and the "Principles for Participation in ACOnet".

Like all our Annual Reports, the latest issue is freely available as a PDF. We will gladly send printed copies free of charge upon request.

Welcome to ACOnet!

ACOnet is the Austrian National Research and Education Network (NREN) for science, research, education, and culture. It is operated by the Vienna University Computer Center, in co-operation with other universities in Austria.

ACOnet provides a nation-wide fibre optic backbone with high-performance access to international academic networks via GÉANT, as well as to the Internet. Furthermore, ACOnet offers its members various target-group-specific services to support research projects and communities.

ACOnet and COVID-19:

The ACOnet team is working from the home office again since 19 November 2021. Our availability has not changed, however. You can reach us Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00, CEST; preferably by e-mail but also by phone (see contact information). In the case of an emergency you may also call us outside our office hours and leave a message. If necessary, we will call back swiftly.

2023: We celebrate Aaron Swartz!

Photo: Aaron Swartz

Our ongoing artistic-technical project series "aaron's law" is dedicated to Aaron Swartz, the American Internet activist for open and free access to knowledge (* 8 November 1986 in Chicago, † 11 January 2013 in New York City).

Together with our partners, we organize events throughout the year that deal with Aaron's technical developments (e.g. Open Library, Creative Commons, Open Source technologies), his thoughts on ethics in technology and, above all, their impact on the here and now.

The starting signal on 11 January 2023 - the 10th anniversary of Aaron's death - is the relaunch of the website, which also serves as an information platform for the project series.

The program of "aaron's law" will be continuously updated - stay tuned! If you would like to help shape this impulse project, please contact us. We look forward to your contribution!

RIPE Academic Cooperation Initiative (RACI)

RACI invites students and researchers to present their Internet-related research at RIPE meetings as well as MENOG, CAPIF, SEE meetings and RIPE NCC Days. Successful applicants receive complimentary tickets, travel and accommodation to the meetings. If you are working on something interesting, please apply! Application deadlines for the upcoming meetings are 29 January resp. 9 March 2023.

Data traffic via GÉANT Peering Service now "unlimited"

Since 28 September 2022, we also classify data packets from the GÉANT Peering Service as noncommercial data traffic, further improving the price/performance ratio for ACOnet participating organizations:

As a result of this change, most hyperscaler cloud traffic is now also in the unlimited traffic class, and the contractually subscribed ACOnet bandwidth only applies to traffic obtained via commercial transit routes (Hurricane Electric, next layer).
