ACOnet & The Arts
When artistic-technical thinking combines different disciplines, surprising perspectives emerge at the end of the fiber optic cable.
National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) are technical network infrastructures primarily serving science, research, and education – in other words, fundamental cultural achievements. This naturally includes the production and experience of art, whether analogue or digital. The transport medium: high-performance fiber optic cables that span the globe.
ACOnet and the Passion for Art
Austrian art and cultural institutions have been part of the ACOnet community for many years: universities of performing arts and fine arts, libraries, museums, musical theaters, ... ACOnet's services support the smooth running of their daily ICT tasks and, indirectly, the fulfillment of their educational mission.
We accompany digital transformation processes by organizing regular meetings to promote the exchange of experience and knowledge within the art and cultural community – and we are working to expand this community. Therefore, we address not only ACOnet participating organizations, but also everyone involved in artistic-technical digitization projects.

For many, art is a necessity of life, a way of taking time for intellectual freedom and holistic perceptions. A growing number of scientists are also using the power of artistic expression, for example, to communicate complex biomedical processes. Moreover, the healing effects of art are increasingly recognized in medicine, and digital tools are emerging worldwide that expand the spectrum of analog therapeutic applications.
On Light Waves Through the Art Universe
Interactive digital art, in particular, as a contemporary phenomenon, can intensify sensory impressions through the interplay of artistic and technical creativity.
Virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), immersive art, telematic performance – physical stages are increasingly expanding into digital and hybrid environments, into extended play spaces that, through new narrative styles, trigger emotional processes to question the often exhaustively complex zeitgeist.
In cooperation with participating organizations, other NRENs (CESNET, CSUC, GARR, PSNC, ...) and numerous artists, ACOnet has already realized highly acclaimed multi-site performances and annual projects – always to explore new technological developments as well as new possibilities of artistic expression and jointly mastering interdisciplinary challenges:
We will continue to put this artistic-technical team spirit to the test in future projects, in a playful yet profound manner.
